However RPG maker is very fun software to work with, just don't have to high expectations of it and use it for hobby purpose. I even see complete crap games made with Unity sold on Steam that by vote manipulation got greenlit. The huge amount of time you need to invest is kinda wasted if you do it with RPG Maker as the chance you will actually sell it is very slim, while on the other hand with Unity the chance of selling is much higher.

Yes, and thats why you could just as well download Unity and do all the effort with that engine. Heed these words lest you become dry and sour like those who have given up above my post. If you are commited then dedicate yourself as much as you possibly can in order to achieve your goals. If you are not committed to it then don't accept the pledge. So these are my words of advice to you: Treat this software as life pledge. You have to know what you want, understand your tools, and be very, very, very dedicated to your project. Making a game is like painting a masterpiece. Many people fail to realize this due to the simplicity of the maker and get burned out. Yes anyone can make a game with this software, but it takes just as much time and effort as if you were to make a game on Unity or CryEngine. What everyone seems to failing to tell you is that it isn't easy. The answer is yes you can sell you your games. Whereas it is all true I wouldn't listen to them. No matter what you go with it will require dedication, but stick to it and your results will be great in the end!Īnd related to the original question, yes, as long as you own the rights to all the graphics, musics, sound, and code in your project, you can sell anything created in the engine with or without the RTP resources. For something more extravagant you may want a different engine (but will still need to code!) so see what works for you. This engine will work great for most 2d windows based games you can imagine as long as you can code it. Īlways worth mentioning is that you should know the limitations of whatever engine you want to use.
The game runs quite well if I do say so myself with just a few bugs due to being a little rushed at the end, but the final project was about 26,000 lines of custom code, similar to if we had coded it in pretty much any other engine. As an example, last year Hyde and I created a top down zombie shooter with the engine (this is another example of a coder and an artist/musician working together). Worth noting is that while this engine is initially based around creating RPGs, the scripting engine is open and allows you to create just about any kind of game you can imagine. So if Yami needed art, he might ask Archeia for an assist while Archeia might ask Yami for help with code. Yami is a proficient coder while Archeia is an amazing artist. This is because they trade what skills they have and help each other out with what skills they have. As an example you might see Archeia and Yami listed on a lot of the same things. If you look around a lot you'll start to see certain names pop up a lot doing a lot of the same things.

One nice thing a lot of "vets" of the RPG Maker series will do is help each other out with what skills they have. The sale price is so low, that the only real risk is time investment, which can be quite substantial for becoming proficient with a given engine. I think that this could provide tons of entertainment, without necessarily ending up with a commecially sucessful game.
I don't think there is anything wrong with that at all.
The software really looks like a hobbyist tool for fans of the genre, rather than an engine targeting commercial game development. I'll have to remember to check back once the sale is over. I'm not sure over what time period the ranking covers, so this could easily be the result of the engine getting a massive short term sales spike during such a big sale. So the engine sells more than any individual game made with the engine. Clicking the Top Sellers tab gives an interesting result RPG Maker is the top seller. As far as I know "To the Moon" is best sold on Steam. Here you can find some games made with RPG maker.
